Shalom

Night falls Friday,
January first,
nineteen ninety nine.
Faithful followers
gather around
hallah and Hebrew songs,
welcoming the Sabbath.
Shabbat candles
signal light shining
through the darkness,
peace settling
after labored days.
Joining the feast,
under full moon’s light,
Betsy enters her
final Sabbath rest.
